Dr. Joanne Wilson is currently the Executive Director of Affiliate Action at the National Federation of the Blind's, National Center in Baltimore, Maryland where she works with the leadership and membership to develop programs that significantly change the lives of individual blind people.
From August 2001 to March 2005 Dr. Wilson served as the 10th Commissioner of the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA), having been appointed by President Bush. As RSA Commissioner, The Honorable Joanne Wilson administered a $2.7 billion dollar program that annually provided services to more than 1 million people with disabilities.
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Wilson pioneered numerous programs for people with disabilities. She created, developed and oversaw the Louisiana Center of the Blind (LCB), Louisiana’s first adult orientation, adjustment and independent living center for the blind. She served from 1982 to 2001 as President of the National Federation of the Blind of Louisiana. She served as member of the board of National Federation of the Blind from 1987 to 2001.
Dr. Wilson graduated with honors from Iowa State University in 1969, having earned a B.S. in Elementary Education and was named a Merrill Palmer scholar. She earned a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling/Administration from Iowa State University in 1971. In 2002, she was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Menlo College, California and in 2003 she was awarded a Doctorate of Humanities from Louisiana Tech University.
