Barbara Pierce has been blind to one degree or another all of her life. She attended public schools and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Oberlin College with an English major. She married a member of the English department and have lived in Oberlin ever since. They raised three children in this small town.
Barbara has worked as a childbirth educator, a hospital chaplain, a college administrator, and editor of the largest circulation publication in the blindness field. She has also been president of the NFB of Ohio since 1984.
She did not hear of the NFB until January of 1974, but as soon as she did, she organized a chapter and became active in the organization.
Her interests are cooking, gardening, knitting, and reading. Their daughter and her family live around the block, so they spend a good deal of time with their two grandchildren. They are active in their local church.
