Ann Burns is the director at the John D. Young Lions' Blind Center. They are located at 100 Crestview Avenue in Absecon, New Jersey 08201. The cross street for NJT Access Link passengers is Pitney Road. Our phone is 609 677 1199 and the fax is 609 677 0331. The center is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
They provide information, referral, peer support and advocacy for the blind and visually impaired of Atlantic County and Northern Cape May County. They include family members in all our programs since they realize that blindness affects the entire family.
At the present time, they have two peer support groups which meet on the second Wednesday and the fourth Tuesday from 11 AM to 1 PM. Members bring their lunches and stay for social time after the group meeting. The group is planning a "Ladies Night" fund raiser on July 14 beginning at 7 PM. This will be a combined Tupperware, Avon and Home Interior demonstration with refreshments.
John DeWitt and Associates are providing computer training classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the Summer. These classes begin with basic keyboard, internet access and e-mail. We can continue with other applications even web design.
Volunteers trained by Health and Senior Services teach the "Healthy Bones" exercise class on Wednesdays at 1 PM to 2 PM. Wednesday mornings find two Braille mentors assisting those wishing to begin their Braille training, or those moving to grade two. We encourage students to acquaint themselves with the Hadley School and to reach for new goals and new knowledge. We encourage independence and empower our participants to become empowered to live the life of their dreams through gaining great skills and learning from great mentors.
This brand new center is the result of the dream of the Lions' Clubs of district 16c and the six local clubs which support this $1,000,000.00 center. The fully-equipped lab is a training place where disability does not impede learning. We are opening doors for the community of the blind and visually impaired to achieve and succeed.
