our Vice President Lori DeMarco, who is a teacher in the Paterson School District, visited the Upper Saddle River New Jersey Y.M.C.A. Lori and her loveable seeing eye dog Lattice, a 81/2 year old Golden Cross breed, were there to speak to Pre-K and kindergarten children on the subject of blind awareness. The children were made aware of the do's and don'ts when coming in contact with a seeing eye dog.
Lori and Lattice gave a demonstration of basic commands for dog guides and the children saw first hand how Lattice guides Lori. Afterwards Lattices' harness was removed and the children were permitted to pet her. Lori explained that they should think of a harness as "working clothes and only when permission is given should a guide dog be spoken to or touched to avoid distraction from the dog's duties.
The children were well prepared and well behaved so a good day was had by all.
